The Scoop: Hospital star; TRIAD meets; big holiday event weekend; Parvin Plunge

The Scoop offers tidbits of news from around Salem County and a few surprises, too.

The landmark star is shining brightly atop The Memorial Hospital of Salem County. With new ownership coming we hope it remains there for years to come.

Salem County TRIAD -- the organization which bings together local law enforcement and senior citizens -- will meet Wednesday, Dec. 9, at noon at the Salem County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, 693 South Broadway, Pennsville. This is a last call for any TRIAD members who plan to attend to RSVP at 856-935-7510 Ext. 8396 or 8378.  As with all of the December meetings, TRIAD organizers expect to be at capacity in a short period of time so be sure to call now to RSVP, they advise seniors.

The 39th Woodstown by Candlelight tour of homes and public buildings is from 6 to 10 p.m. in historic Woodstown, Friday, Dec. 4, 6 to 10 p.m. The Craft Fair associated with the tour will kick off two hours earlier in the borough hall.  The streets of Woodstown look magical with all of the beautiful Christmas lights in the homes. It's a night not to be missed. Tickets are available at the tour or visit www.woodstownbycandlelight.org for more information.

Saturday, Dec. 5, is Salem City's big day. The annual "Magic of Chriwtmas" Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Broadway in downtown area. Following, 1 to 6 p.m., is the annual Yuletide Tour of historic homes and buildings. This is all followed at 6:30 p.m. by the lighting of the community Christmas tree at the Old Courthouse.

Winter? We've been fortunate this year. No ice or snow or bitter temps -- yet. Some forecasts call for a mild December. We'll take it.

Salem County Vo-tech's FFA Chapter is hosting Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 5, 8 to 11 a.m. Cost: Adults, $8, children 5 to 12, $5 and children 4 free. Photos with Santa and free craft items will be available for the children. That event coincides with the Second Annual Holiday Extravaganza that runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will include vendors offering unique gifts, baked goods, a raffle and face painting. The vo-tech school is located at 880 Route 45 in Mannington Township.

The Pennsville Historical Society is marking the holiday season with its annual Open House Christmas Tours at its Church Landing Farm House Museum in Pennsville on Dec. 6, 13 and 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. Each Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. there will be guest organists playing on the society's vintage pump organ. There will be numerous Christmas-themed displays throughout the museum at 86 Churchlanding Road. The Parvin State Park Appreciation Committee has rescheduled its annual Plunge with Santa until Saturday, Dec. 19 in Parvin Lake. Those who want to take part should meet the Danna Trailhead property, 789 Parvin Mill Rd., at 3 p.m. for registration and "gathering." Santa will lead those willing to plunge promptly at 3:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per person, payable the day of the event when you register and sign waiver for participation.
