Go independent in Paulsboro

To the Editor:

My wife, Lisa Lozada-Shaw, is an independent candidate for Paulsboro Council. She's known for being brash, outspoken and to the point. But there's a side to her many don't see.

Lisa grew up in North Philadelphia, where good people often end up as statistics. She refused to let her environment define her. Unfortunately, she's seen signs of what we moved away from in North Philly here in Paulsboro in the form of drug dealing, violent crime and corruption.

We've been crime victims on several occasions since living here, and have felt  frustrated dealing with an overworked, ineffective criminal justice system that treats those who are wealthy and guilty better than it does the poor and innocent. My wife is running for office to fight against this, and for a brighter future for us all.

The side of her people don't usually see is when she's caring for our special-needs son, or advocating for other special-needs children.

I've seen her work tirelessly for our community. She coached soccer for six years, and served as vice president of our neighborhood watch. She is also is a special education aide/and teacher, as well as parent-teacher organization president of Gloucester County's Bankbridge Development Center, where our son is a student. She's been a Paulsboro school board member fort six years. And she is vice president of the Gibbstown Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. I'm a volunteer firefighter, and she has to put up with my fire pager blaring in her ear in the middle of the night.

If you agree with Lisa's campaign platform, you should vote for her Tuesday.  I'm proud to be her husband. Our children are proud to have her as their mother. And I'm proud of her.

Back Paulsboro Democrats' trio

To the Editor:

As a lifelong Paulsboro resident, I am proud to support Democrats Gary Stevenson for mayor, and Larry Haynes and Alfonso Giampola, for council. Residents are well aware of the struggles we face each day, and the time has come to elect a team with integrity and the commitment to move Paulsboro forward.

These candidates' community involvement record speaks for itself. All three  have served on the borough council and are current members of the Paulsboro Sportsmens Club. Stevenson and Giampola have been fire department volunteers for more than 30 years, while Larry Haynes, an Army veteran, was past president of the Paulsboro Little League. These are only a few of their accomplishments.

Stevenson, Haynes and Giampola are fully cognizant of the issues that need to be addressed and will work tirelessly to resolve these problems. However, they cannot do this without your support. Every every vote counts, and I ask you to cast your ballots Tuesday for a dedicated team that won't quit for a better Paulsboro.

Note: The writer is chairman of the Committee to Elect Stevenson, Haynes & Giampola. In Tuesday's election, Stevenson, now a councilman, defeated current Mayor Jeff Hamilton in June for the Democratic mayor's nomination. Stevenson is unopposed on Tuesday's ballot for mayor. Haynes and Giampola face unaffiliated candidate Lisa Lozada-Shaw for two council seats.

Re-elect Keith for Glassboro schools

To the Editor:

I'm writing to endorse incumbent Ed Keith for the Glassboro Board of Education. I have known him for more than 25 years and have found him to care deeply about the borough's children.

He has volunteered for many activities over that time. He's been a youth baseball coach, and a parks-and-recreation  soccer coach, to name a couple.

In Keith's time on the school board, the district's working relationship with Rowan University has grown by leaps and bounds -- all for the good of the kids. I've noticed in some opposing candidates' literature (five candidates are running for three seats Tuesday)  a desire to have a relationship with Rowan. If these people haven't noticed, such a relationship is that is already in place because of our existing board.

Keith is running again Tuesday because he cares deeply about the community and has never asked for anything in return except a chance to continue his good work. A person with such a deep commitment needs our support.
