"Hello, Jack,

"You mentioned Joyce in your last column.

"As you know, she fell and fractured her hip. She is recovering at Genesis on Sharp Street in Millville.

"She is doing well, looks great, is positive as usual and, knowing her determination, she will soon be going home.

"For those who wish to send a card, she is in room 403.''

"Tuesday morning early, get in my car thinking about everything that has to be done.

"Stop at Barnett's Citgo in Newport as I usually do for morning coffee, gas Gatorade for the guys, etc.

"It's going to be hot.

"Ice machine is locked. Door is locked.

"Out pops Mr. Barnett.

"'Craig, what's up?'

"Need ice.

"'Craig, it's Tuesday. I'm closed on Tuesday.'

"Forgot.

"'That's OK, get what you need and we will straighten up tomorrow,' he said.

"So I get my ice and drinks and head out to work and I'm thinking that man has been working at that station since I was an infant and mom was getting her first tank of gas with me strapped on her back.

"The moral to this story?

"We all like the convenience of Wawas and such, but let's not forget the small guys who bent over backward for their customers long before the chains were here, because there aren't many of them left.

"They won't open for you when they're closed and when is the last time you heard, 'Need that windshield cleaned?'

"You will if fueling up at Mr. Barnett's.''
