Flags were placed on the more than 2,700 graves at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery Wednesday ahead of Memorial Day services there.
PILESGROVE TWP. -- In preparation for Memorial Day, American flags have been placed on all of the graves at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery.
Members of the Jr. ROTC at the Salem County Vocational-Technical Schools volunteered their time to placed the flags on each of the graves Wednesday.
At the cemetery, on Route 45 in Pilesgrove Township, there are more than 2,700 veterans and their spouses buried.
Along with the flags on the graves, larger flags will be placed along the walkway at the cemetery.
The cemetery will be the site of a Memorial Day service on Monday organized by local VFW and American Legion posts.
Memorial Day events in the region
Commander of the Corporal Joseph C. Toulson VFW Post 253 of Elsinboro Michael Shimp will lead the ceremony. Following prayers and the recognition of those who placed wreaths at the monument, Patrick Hassler will present the guest speech.
Hassler is a retired U.S. Navy commander and life member and senior vice commander of VFW Post 253.
The annual event begins at 12 noon. The public is invited to attend.
