This is the first year for the run/walk. Organizers hope it will become an annual event in Carneys Point.

CARNEYS POINT TWP. -- A large crowd of participants and supporters turned out Saturday morning for the inaugural Chief Edmund Spinelli Jr. Memorial Run.

It was a sunny, but chilly morning as the group gathered in the village section of the township. Organizers hope that this will be just the first of many events like its kind in the years to come.

The 5K walk and run was held in memory of late Carneys Point Township Chief of Police Edmund Spinelli Jr. The chief died suddenly nearly five years ago at age 45.

While helping to keep the late chief's memory alive, the event also raised funds that will go toward a scholarship for a local student interested in a career in law enforcement.

Some 50 to 60 runners took part. Others walked and a large number of supporters also turned out to volunteer to make the event a success, organizers said.

The medal winners from the race, according to a post on the Carneys Point Police Department Facebook page, were:

* 13 and  Under Female - Braele DiGregorio

* 14 - 19 Female - Alexis Skodzinski
