"The Bridgeton Free Public Library and Bridgeton Main Street Association are teaming up to bring lots of fun and interesting activities to the City of Bridgeton during Gotham Month.

"In May, the City of Bridgeton resolved to designate October as Gotham Month in Bridgeton. This idea of Bridgeton being the mythical home of Batman, the Gotham City superhero created by DC Comics, first came to light 24 years ago through the research of former newspaperman and Bridgetonian, Dave Price. Price discovered that DC Comics' latitude and longitude location for Gotham City was actually Bridgeton, NJ. In addition, based on latitudinal and longitudinal descriptions, the home of Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter ego, is none other than the Cox House, known locally as Old Stone House, on West Commerce Street.

"Price recalls, 'He first learned of the connection from a comic strip he found on a wire service in 1978, which clearly showed the location of Gotham City to be the City of Bridgeton. Price subsequently followed up on the connection with officials at DC Comics, and with tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, they confirmed that Bridgeton was indeed the home of Batman.'

"Bridgeton is highlighting this fun fact as a local attraction and opportunity to celebrate the city's honorary designation. Included in this inaugural year's activities for the public to enjoy are: a free screening of an Italian superhero film Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., and free Batman movies featured at the Library on Thursday evenings beginning Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. All movie events include free popcorn! Teen activities based on the same theme will be held Tuesday evenings at 6 pm and Superhero themed children's activities on Tuesday mornings for preschoolers beginning Oct. 11. The library is also offering inexpensive pictures of kids with their favorite superheroes on Saturday Oct. 15, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. More information will be available on the library website: http://bridgetonlibrary.org/

"Meanwhile, Bridgeton Main Street reports that "super villains" and "superheroes" will appear around the community to give out free raffle tickets for a drawing to occur at the end of the month. The first raffle ticket give-away will occur on Sept. 28, in downtown Bridgeton. There are six additional give-away days planned, go to www.getbridgeton.com under the projects tab for a full schedule of locations and times.

"A Batman themed window display competition between downtown businesses is also being presented and the public is invited to participate through voting for your favorite window display. The competition begins on Saturday, Oct. 15, and voting ends as of Friday, Oct. 28. Locations and Participants will be mentioned at a later date.

"The Greater Bridgeton community is invited to take part in the festivities. More information about the free raffle tickets give-away locations, other planned activities, future Gotham Month plans, and how you can support this fun community project can be obtained from Bridgeton Main Street's website www.getbridgeton.com, or, the Bridgeton Free Public Library."
