"Greetings, BEN,

"Just wanted to share this info with you, in hopes that you will help spread the word.

"On Friday, Sept. 18, the Salem High School Based Youth Services Program (YOUTH CONNECTION) will host a Fatherhood Initiative Tailgate Party on the grounds of Salem High School.

"This event is targeting Father Engagement.

"This includes fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other significant males in our students' lives.

"There are many ways fathers or significant male figures can be involved in their children's lives. One of these is to just relax and have fun, and that's what this event is all about.

"A time to just hang out with your child. A movie is included in this event and will begin at 8 p.m.

"This event is a Fatherhood Initiative. However, we will also have a pep rally for the Salem Rams football team and cheerleaders.

"Their first home game is Saturday, Sept. 19, vs. Clayton.  The event begins at 7 p.m. and is free. Food is included.

"Attendees should bring a blanket, chair and mosquito spray.

"For additional information, contact  Ina Jetter at 856-935-3900, ext 3273.''

City council has made sure the door is not closed on funding the Bridgeton Library.

Council voted not to put it on the November ballot.

Had it been defeated, there is no way the city could have continued to find funding.

Dee Batten, for one, is tired of funding every program that comes along and not the library.

"We need the library,'' she said. "I'm not against helping others, but we need the library.''

And we will have the library

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Val Dolcini reminds farmers and ranchers that they have until Sept. 30 to enroll in several key Farm Bill safety net programs -- Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC), Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy).

"These programs provide important risk protection for farm and dairy operations, so it is important not to miss the deadline for enrollment," said Dolcini.

"Producers already have elected ARC or PLC, so now is the time to sign the contract and enroll for the 2014 and 2015 crop years.

"I also remind dairy operations to enroll for coverage in 2016. Just $100 covers 90 percent of milk production at a $4 margin, and with incremental premiums, up to an $8 margin can be covered."

Gateway's College Readiness Now program has removed much of the mystery and confusion about the college application process and is helping families in our community.

Students in the program have visited colleges, received tutoring in entrance exams, and received information on financing options.

Albert B. Kelly, Gateway's president and CEO, spent time with the students and looked at some of their work at an open house for the program in August.

"I really like this program because it prepares our youth for college and gives them the opportunity to see what colleges have to offer and how they might fit their needs," said Kelly.

"I'm really pleased to see the progress they have made so far."

According to AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski, "There are some years where the cause and effect nature of El Nino practically brings an early shut down to the Atlantic hurricane season and other years where we see tropical storms or hurricanes well into October."

The average peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is around September 10, according to NOAA.
