Hakeem Williams allegedly shot and killed Jakaiye Ingram on South Broad Street in Penns Grove on July 9, according to authorities.
SALEM -- The suspect in the killing of a man and the kidnapping of the victim's son has been brought back to New Jersey to face justice, authorities say.
Hakeem Williams, 31, was extradited from Pennsylvania late last week. He is being held in the Salem County Correctional Facility in Mannington Township on $1 million bail.
He is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jakaiye Ingram, 24, of Pennsville on the afternoon of July 9 in Penns Grove.
According to the Salem County Prosecutor's Office, Ingram was driving south on Broad Street near Church Street at the time of the late-afternoon incident. In the car was Ingram's girlfriend, Yasmine Taylor, and the couple's one-year-old son.
Authorities say in front of the cemetery across from Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Ingram stopped the car and got out. He and a man that authorities now identify as Williams became engaged in a confrontation and Williams allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Ingram multiple times.
Taylor, according to authorities, got out of the passenger seat and ran to aid Ingram who was leaning against the cemetery's wrought iron fence. When she looked around, she saw the suspect jump into her car, make a U-turn and drive off, heading north.
Man who allegedly stabbed wife called 911 to say she's 'not breathing'
The car was later found abandoned near the intersection of Fifth Street and Wood Street in Philadelphia. The child, unharmed, was found still strapped in his car seat.
The child was safely returned to his mother.
Williams, who had addresses in Penns Grove and Philadelphia, turned himself in to Philadelphia police a day later on July 10.
Williams was charged with murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, armed robbery, kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child
He remained in custody in Pennsylvania until his extradition to New Jersey on Thursday.
Williams is expected to make an appearance in Superior Court in Salem later this month, according to authorities.
