The Scoop offers tidbits of new from around Salem County and a few surprises, too.

Thousands expected at the 44th Annual Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival at the Salem County Fairgrounds. The festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday -- 1 to 10:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Plenty of great music right here in our own backyard.

--

It's dry. In the western part of Salem County, at least, we're between 3 and 4 inches behind in rainfall.

--

Here's a date you must mark on your calendar -- Saturday, Sept. 12. That's Septemberfest in Pennsville. The morning parade, day-long activities in Riverview Beach Park and fireworks to cap off the day are not to be missed.

--

Seems work has resumed after a long, mysterious stoppage on Broadway in downtown Salem. New crosswalks and some "bump outs" to make the business district more appealing, officials say. Bet downtown residents will sure be glad when those metal plates and the noise are gone.

Salem County TRIAD will hold its next quarterly meeting Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Salem County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge on Route 49, Pennsville, beginning at 12 noon. Steve Lee, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, will be speaking to seniors on avoiding fraud, deceit and misrepresentation in the sale of goods and services.  Refreshments will be served. You must RSVP for this meeting by calling 856-935-7510 Ext. 8396 or 8378.  A message will suffice as your RSVP if there is no answer.

The remodeled Pole Tavern Wawa has been welcoming back customers. Stop by.

Hard to believe it's September already. Where did the summer go? Schools are reopening and before we know it the chill will begin to set in.

--

We've seen woolly bears crossing country roads. Is that a bad sign? Can they predict how bad this winter will be?

--

Earlier this year we mentioned how it appeared no sunflowers were growing in the field on Route 45 in Mannington just north of Bassett Road. Well, they are back. What a wonderful surprise to see them.

Salem County freeholders have appointed Gregory Wright to the Salem Community College Board of Trustees.

Visit the Pennsville Township Historical Society Museum at Church Landing Farm, 86 Church Landing Rd., Pennsville, along the Delaware River. The museum is open Wednesday and Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m. You'll find a treasure trove of local history, including plenty about Riverview Beach Park. Also look for the society's display at Septemberfest.
