Why back Dems' right-winger for Wash. Twp. mayor?; Harrison Twp. newcomers will end tax boosts | Letters

Renee Iannace writes that this candidate is far afield from Democratic Party ideals.

To the Editor:

Joann Gattinelli, the handpicked Washington Township mayoral candidate of the township's Democrat political bosses, raises serious questions about the credibility of her candidacy with Facebook posts that she has purportedly shared or liked.

As recently as last year, these posts included propaganda from opposing immigration, as well as items disparaging to President Barack Obama and to multiple minority groups.

Despite this right-wing ideology, Gattinelli was favored by the bosses and was given the Democrats' "line" on the June 7 primary ballot. (Incumbent Mayor Barbara Wallace is also running for the Democrats' nomination.)

During the endorsement process, Gattinelli apparently failed to disclose her right-wing philosophies or offer a plan to improve Washington Township. Now she is the beneficiary of tens of thousands of dollars in support from organizations that are supposed to promote Democratic ideals.

The Democratic Party is supposed to be the party of the people. Gattinelli's candidacy is clearly not of the people, but of a chosen few.

Harrison Twp. newcomers will end tax boosts

To the Editor:

There are far too many politicians who say one thing and do another, even in Harrison Township.

Mayor Lou Manzo and Township Committeeman Matt Diggons raised our property taxes every year they have been in office.  This year, our municipal tax bill is expected to go up another 5 percent.

Every year, people vote for Republican leadership in Harrison Township, but get more of the same tax-and-spend policies from politicians like Manzo and Diggons, who are running this year for re-election to their township committee seats. (No Democrats have filed for nominations.)

On June 7, Republicans can finally end the endless stream of tax increases and vote for fiscally conservative leadership. There is a second slate of candidates opposing the incumbents.

Vince Gangemi Sr. owns a family farm. He has decades of experience creating local jobs and giving back to our children as a leader in recreation.

Jeff Jacques is a refreshing conservative leader who served our country in the Marine Corps. He has years of experience balancing budgets and negotiating contracts in the private sector.

It's time for us to throw out the failed politicians and replace them with leaders who will put taxpayers first. Please join me in supporting Gangemi and Jacques for the township committee in the June 7 Republican primary.
