The incident took place in Oldmans Township on March 24, according to New Jersey State Police.

OLDMANS TWP. -- New Jersey State Police are searching for man they say used $1,100 in counterfeit money to buy a used car in Salem County.

According to authorities, the man used used fake $100 bills when he purchased a 1997 Dodge Intrepid at a home in Oldmans Township on March 24.

Around 9:15 p.m. that day the victim met with the suspect to complete a car sale that came about through a Craigslist posting. The suspect gave the seller 11 $100 bills.

After the suspect left, the seller noticed that each bill had the same serial number. The unidentified victim immediately called police.

State troopers investigating the case discovered that just before he met the victim, the suspect attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill at a Wawa in nearby Logan Township.

A witness at the store told state police that the suspect was driving a gold Pontiac Grand Am.

On Tuesday state police released surveillance photos taken at the Wawa of the man they are looking for.

Anyone recognizing this man or has information about the case is asked to contact Tpr. J. Duda at Woodstown Station at 856-769-0775. Anonymous tips are welcome, police say.

State police say any time a cash transaction takes place, it should be held in a public location and the bills used should be carefully inspected.

If something appears suspicious, police say, call them immediately.
